Clean for Good: Championing Fair Wages and Transforming the Cleaning Industry
Clean for Good, a leading social enterprise dedicated to transforming the cleaning industry, proudly announces the release of its inaugural impact report, unveiled for Living Wage Week and following its recent B Corp accreditation. Developed in collaboration with Eido Research, this report provides a deeper look into the challenging conditions faced by cleaning professionals across the country, including low wages, exploitative terms and conditions, and job insecurity. More than just highlighting these stark realities, the report showcases the far-reaching positive impact that the organisation’s priorities of fair wages, dignified working conditions, and ethical business practices can have on workers' lives. By championing these values, Clean for Good is not only raising the bar for industry standards but is also establishing itself as a leader in responsible, worker-centric business.
Receiving B Corp certification was a significant achievement for Clean for Good. This certification scrutinises every aspect of a company’s operations—from governance to environmental impact—ensuring that businesses meet the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility. Now joining the ranks of prominent social impact businesses such as Patagonia and Innocent, Clean for Good has not only established itself as a trusted, purpose-driven enterprise but has also achieved an exceptional level of customer satisfaction, achieving a customer net promoter score of 81.
Already recognised for its commitment to fair wages and social impact, Clean for Good has previously been honoured with the Living Wage Champion Award in 2021 for its dedication to promoting the living wage within its communities and sector. As a certified social enterprise, Clean for Good is committed to setting new standards and driving meaningful change, ensuring that ethical practices and fair compensation become the norm rather than the exception in the cleaning sector.
Clean for Good’s focus on worker rights aligns with a broader shift in the UK’s labour policies, reinforcing the growing demand for fair treatment and worker protections across all sectors. The proposed Employment Rights Bill, currently under debate in the House of Commons aims to bolster protections by banning exploitative zero-hours contracts, ending fire-and-rehire practices, and introducing essential rights from day one. Clean for Good has continued to work proactively ahead of government pledges and commitments to fair pay, sick leave, and stable employment from its inception and welcomes the new measures stated by Prime Minister The Rt. Hon Sir Keir Starmer KCB KC MP in a recent briefing.
The Labour Party has described this regulatory effort as “the biggest upgrade to rights at work for a generation” calling for further measures such as expanding the right to request flexible work and enhancing day-one rights for employees. Clean for Good’s model and track record in the cleaning industry continue to set a benchmark for how social enterprises can address workers' rights and create meaningful change within the industry. The organisation recently celebrated its 7-year anniversary of paying the real Living Wage, marking thousands of hours of fairly compensated work in central London. One cleaner shared: “It’s a complete change. I can earn more and work less, spend time with my family, and I’m paid fairly. It’s a big change; I’m happy.” This example illustrates how responsible businesses can lead the way in advocating for transformative changes in working conditions across the UK.
For cleaners, these changes could be life-changing. “We’re ready to strike,” said one cleaner in a recent Guardian article. “Losing five weeks of work per year is deeply unfair. Our bills and rent don’t stop, and without sick pay, we’re forced to choose between working while ill or losing our income.” These stark realities highlight the urgent need for reforms that will provide cleaners with the fair pay and job security they deserve, allowing them to live without the constant stress of financial instability.
